State Library of Victoria

in 2011, Musubi was entrusted to develop a world-class digital wayfinding solution for the State Library of Victoria, centred around a freestanding tower that gracefully wraps around a heritage-listed column in the main octagon information room. This room, a primary collection zone for visitors entering the library, will be transformed into an engaging and informative space. The design is particularly sensitive to the heritage structure, ensuring that the tower does not physically touch the column. Instead, it will stand as a symbol of innovation, guiding visitors and enhancing their experience by informing them of current and upcoming events within the library.

This tower will serve as a prominent focal point, signaling the library's transition into a new era while providing a robust platform for improved visitor navigation and orientation. Musubi's solution is not just about aesthetics; it’s about functionality, sustainability, and technological excellence.

The design considerations, led by Yelena Beylin-Perry, outline the critical elements of the tower:

1. The tower must be geometrical and symmetrical, creating a harmonious presence in the octagon room.

2. It will feature four LCD screens in portrait orientation, strategically placed to offer multiple viewing angles and ensure visibility from various points in the room.

3. These screens will be demountable, allowing for future technological upgrades without disrupting the overall design.

4. The tower will be constructed from perforated metal, offering opportunities for artistic expression, with slightly rounded edges to enhance ergonomic interaction.

5. A distinctive illuminated band, backlit through the perforated metal, will crown the tower, adding a visual highlight that draws attention.

Additionally, sustainability is a core principle in Musubi’s approach. The team will explore the possibility of reclaiming old metal shelves stored in the library’s catacombs to repurpose them for the tower’s housing. This aligns with the project’s emphasis on minimising production costs and creating a design that is both innovative and environmentally conscious.

By integrating these elements, Musubi is poised to deliver a digital wayfinding solution that not only respects the library's rich history but also propels it into a future of enhanced visitor engagement and sustainable innovation.
